EPB launches an IonQ quantum computer in Chattanooga

An ordered machine has become installed research infrastructure. Commercial access is planned for October; useful power-grid results are still to come.

EPB’s Forte Enterprise installation moves a Chattanooga quantum centre from an order toward research use.

EPB, Chattanooga’s electricity and communications provider, has launched an IonQ Forte Enterprise quantum computer at its local quantum centre. The September 18 announcement advances a partnership first announced in April 2025 from a planned installation to physical research infrastructure.

Why this matters: researchers gain a place to develop and test quantum-computing workflows alongside conventional computing. EPB says graduate fellows will be the first users, with power-grid research among the intended applications.

The boundary: the centre expects to open for business in early October. Announced users and research projects are not completed customer results. No new processor benchmark, useful grid calculation, independent acceptance test or economic advantage is reported.

Quantum computers already operate at other centres, including IBM’s European data centre opened in 2024. This is a new local deployment, not a first-ever quantum computer or evidence of commercial readiness.
