IBM plans Switzerland’s first Quantum System Two at CSCS

IBM, Lockheed Martin and ETH Zurich say Switzerland’s first IBM Quantum System Two will be installed at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano. IBM will operate the machine; CSCS will provide power, cooling and security; and ETH Zurich will coordinate access for universities, selected companies and other Swiss organizations. The initial agreement runs through 2029.

The system is expected to use IBM’s Nighthawk r2 superconducting processor and to enter operation by the end of 2026. It will sit in the same facility as the Alps supercomputer, giving researchers a practical place to develop hybrid workflows that divide work between ordinary high-performance computing and a quantum processor.

Why this matters: access, operating support and proximity to classical infrastructure are prerequisites for useful quantum computing. A dedicated system can help Swiss researchers learn what workloads fit the hardware, train specialists and test the mundane engineering around scheduling, security and maintenance.

The boundary is straightforward. The computer is not yet installed or operating. The announcement contains no new processor benchmark, logical-qubit result, error-corrected workload, advantage over the best practical classical method, customer outcome or economic evidence. Switzerland already has quantum activity, and System Two already operates at IBM and partner sites elsewhere; the defensible first is only Switzerland’s first IBM Quantum System Two.

This expands planned access. It does not make quantum computing commercially ready, so Quantum Litmus keeps MONITOR and the 2030–2033 window unchanged.
