Credit first: DOCOMO did more than run another laboratory demonstration. It used D-Wave’s hybrid optimization service on a real telecom configuration problem, accepted the result into network planning and day-to-day operations, and reported large reductions in the signals generated when devices cross tracking-area boundaries. The significance is repetition: a large operator returned after an earlier production application and applied the platform to a distinct, more complicated operational trade-off. That is stronger commercial evidence than a one-off pilot. The boundary is equally clear. The disclosed solver combines quantum and classical computing, and today’s release does not provide a fresh like-for-like comparison with the best classical optimizer, full cost accounting or a way to isolate how much of the result came from the quantum processor. It demonstrates operational usefulness; it does not demonstrate quantum advantage.
